Hi, I am Jalal
Founder and Director of Research Society. I love helping researchers in scientific data analysis with Python, Matlab, NCL, GrADs, CDO, SPSS, and Microsoft Excel.
Before you start research, you need to know data and how to download them. In this tutorial, you will learn how to download climate data by Internet Download Manager (IDM). First, you need to register to access data from data provider server, for example, NASA Earth data server, https://urs.earthdata.nasa.gov/home. Here, I will download Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) data from NASA (https://gpm.nasa.gov/data/directory).
This tutorial assumes that you have already registered to access data and IDM installed.
You will know after completing this tutorial:
- How to convert HDF format into NetCDF format
- How to select date
- How to define study area (latitude and longitude)
- How to select variables
- How to download data links list
- How to download data by IDM and save them in your local directory
- NetCDF data download sources
Data download
Step 1: Open the official data download link https://gpm.nasa.gov/data/directory.
Step 2: Please select the IMERG Final Run.
Step 3: Please click on download URL (30 minute).
Step 4: From the right corner, you need to click on “Subset / Get Data” to get NetCDF format.
Step 5: After that, you will find different options you need to select carefully.
Step 6: Please check the third option if you want to get NetCDF format.
Step 7: Please select the date that you need.
Step 8: Please select your study area (latitude [-90, 90] and longitude [-180, 180]).
Step 9: Please select variables you want to download and click on “Get Data”.
Step 10: Please download the “Download links list”.
Step 11: Please open the IDM.
You can download it from https://www.internetdownloadmanager.com/
Step 12: Please click on “Downloads and option” and set the download path, where you want to keep your data.
Step 13: From the “Tasks” bar, please select “Import From text file”. Here, you need to add the data download links file (text file that you already downloaded). Finally, the IDM will ask the user name and password of GPM data. Please check the “save username and password”, so IDM can download all data automatically.
You can watch the above YouTube video for further clarification.
